The Hakushu price in Malaysia is RM599–RM845 for Distiller's Reserve and RM880–RM1,699 for the 12 Year Old (October 2026). In practice, most shops ask about RM600–RM660 for the first and RM1,020–RM1,040 for the second. That makes Hakushu a little cheaper than Yamazaki at each level.

Why Hakushu prices vary between shops

Japanese single malts show the widest price spreads in Malaysia. Hakushu 12 is a good example. One shop sells it on pre-order for RM880, three shops ask about RM1,020–RM1,040, and one lists it at RM1,699. So the middle group is the fair Hakushu price in Malaysia, not either end.

Several things cause this. First, aged Hakushu arrives in small batches, so some shops take pre-orders. Second, a few sites show a high "regular" price beside a "sale" price. For example, one lists the 12 at RM1,988 regular and RM880 on sale. Finally, older duplicate listings can show stale prices. Because of all this, always compare two or three shops.

Tax adds a fixed floor too. Malaysia charges excise and import duty per litre, whatever the bottle costs. Our whisky tax guide explains how that works.

Hakushu history and style

Suntory opened the Hakushu distillery in 1973. It sits in the forest at the foot of Mt Kaikomagatake, in Japan's Southern Alps. Suntory calls it one of the highest distilleries in the world. The single malt came later, in 1994.

Water shapes the style. According to the House of Suntory Hakushu page, rain and snow filter through ancient granite before the distillery uses it. That soft water, plus the cool mountain air, gives Hakushu its fresh, green character.

Hakushu also feeds Suntory's blends. For instance, it is one of three distilleries behind Hibiki and Suntory Toki. Meanwhile, its sister malt Yamazaki gives those blends fruit and spice.

Every Hakushu bottle meets the Japan Spirits & Liqueurs Makers Association standard for "Japanese whisky". So it was distilled, aged at least three years and bottled in Japan. Our Japanese whisky guide covers the rules.

Green tea and soft smoke.

Where to buy Hakushu in Malaysia

Look at specialist online shops first. In our check, whisky.my, Wine Warehouse, Kanpai, Nomu and Goodstuff all listed Hakushu. Stock of the 12 comes and goes, so a pre-order is common. Before you pay, compare the Hakushu price at a few Malaysia shops. Our where to buy whisky guide lists trusted retailers.

How to drink Hakushu

Hakushu's fresh style works very well in a highball. Fill a tall glass with ice, pour one part whisky, then add three or four parts cold soda. A twist of lemon or a mint leaf lifts the fresh notes. Our whisky cocktails guide has the full method.

On the other hand, sip the 12 neat or with a few drops of water. A tulip-shaped glass helps you catch the herbal aroma. As always, drink slowly and responsibly.
