Toki has limited availability. In our survey, only whisky.my listed it at a mainstream price. Kakubin, on the other hand, showed up at nine shops, including Jaya Grocer. Most of them asked about RM200–RM240.
Is Toki or Kakubin better value?
On price alone, Kakubin wins, since it often costs less than the Suntory Toki price in Malaysia. In other words, Kakubin is the budget pick for a Suntory highball in Malaysia. It is also easier to find. Still, Toki is a little stronger at 43% against 40%. It also draws on Suntory's two famous malt distilleries. So if you see Toki at RM269, it is a fair buy for highball fans.
Both are good value next to Suntory's single malts. For comparison, Yamazaki Distiller's Reserve starts at RM620–RM1,186. If you want something in between, try The Chita single grain.
What is Suntory Toki?
Toki is a blended Japanese whisky from Suntory. According to the House of Suntory Toki page, it draws on three distilleries. Suntory names each part:
- Hakushu, lightly peated malt: bright orchard fruit, green herbs and gentle smoke.
- Chita, heavy grain: rich grain, soft sweetness and a round texture.
- Yamazaki, Spanish oak cask malt: Japanese spice and incense.
As a result, Toki tastes fresh and light, with a little sweetness and a faint touch of smoke. Suntory pitches it as a highball whisky, showing how people in Japan drink whisky today. It also makes a peatier version, Toki Black, but we did not find it in Malaysia.
What is Suntory Kakubin?
Kakubin is much older. Suntory's founder, Shinjiro Torii, created it in 1937. Its square bottle, with a tortoise-shell pattern cut into the glass, makes it easy to spot. Today it has a strength of 40%.
Suntory describes its taste as delicate. For this reason, many drinkers prefer it with soda rather than neat. Our whisky cocktails guide covers the Kakubin highball too.

How to make a Toki highball
A highball is simply whisky, ice and soda. Yet small details make a big difference. Suntory stresses that the glass, the whisky and the soda should all be cold.
- Chill the glass. Fill a tall glass with ice and stir to cool it. Then pour off any melted water.
- Add the whisky. Pour one part Toki or Kakubin over fresh ice.
- Top with soda. Add about three parts cold soda water down the side of the glass.
- Stir once. Lift the ice gently, so you keep the bubbles.
- Garnish. Twist a strip of lemon or grapefruit peel over the top.
Suntory also suggests the highball as a partner for food, since it is light and fizzy. For more ideas, see our whisky food pairing guide. Of course, keep highballs to a sensible number, and never drink and drive.
