Where to Buy Whisky in Malaysia (and How to Avoid Fakes)

Legit online shops, specialist stores and supermarkets, plus a simple check for the Customs tax stamp so you never pay for a fake.

By Whisky Malaysia Editorial Team10 min read

Where to buy whisky in Malaysia comes down to one rule: buy from a licensed seller you can trace. Specialist retailers such as Single & Available, eLuen Heng, Whiskery and W Wine & Liquor Warehouse sell online and deliver. Supermarkets such as Jaya Grocer stock whisky too. On Shopee and Lazada, stick to official brand stores. Then check the Customs tax stamp, the setem cukai, with the official app. This guide lists verified shops and shows how to spot a fake.

Where to buy whisky in Malaysia: the quick answer

There are five safe places to buy whisky in Malaysia. Each suits a different need, so pick the one that fits your budget and location.

  • Specialist online retailers: the widest range, with delivery across the country.
  • Specialist shops: walk-in stores in the Klang Valley where staff can advise you.
  • Supermarkets: convenient for popular blends while you shop.
  • Official brand stores on Shopee and Lazada: good for promotions, as long as the store is official.
  • Duty-free shops: cheaper for many blends, but limited to 1 litre on arrival. See our duty free whisky guide.

No matter where you buy whisky, the same checks apply. A trusted seller and an intact tax stamp matter more than the last few ringgit of savings.

Online whisky retailers in Malaysia

Online shops are the easiest answer to where to buy whisky if you live outside KL. We checked each retailer below on 16 Oct 2026. All of them had working websites and clear delivery terms.

RetailerDeliveryNotes
eLuen HengKL RM10, Selangor RM15 (free above RM300). Elsewhere RM30 flat (free above RM500). Klang Valley 2–4 working days, elsewhere 4–7.Run by Luen Heng F&B, which says it has traded for over 70 years. Covers East and West Malaysia. Warehouse pickup available.
Single & AvailableFree Klang Valley delivery above RM499. About 3 working days locally, up to 5 outside the Klang Valley.Specialist whisky retailer, founded 2001. In-store pickup at its two KL shops.
WhiskeryOffers same-day delivery. Coverage area not stated on the current site.Online-only independent shop. Also sells Riedel glassware.
W Wine & Liquor WarehouseOnline orders plus two physical shops.Calls itself "Malaysia's largest wine retailer". Also stocks whisky and glassware.

Delivery terms as shown on each retailer's website, checked 16 Oct 2026. Terms change, so confirm at checkout.

You may also see Boozeat in older lists. However, its domain did not load when we checked, so we do not list it as a current option. Shopee's own 2023 list of alcohol delivery stores also named Tong Woh, Albertwines2u, Cellar 18 and others. Check each one is still trading before you order.

What about cheap online discounters?

Some online stores list whisky well below the typical shelf price. Our price tables show this as the "lowest seen" figure. Discounters may sell parallel-import stock or a different bottle size, so the low price is not always a sign of a fake. Still, ask the seller two questions before you pay. First, does the bottle carry a Customs tax stamp? Second, who imported it? A licensed seller can answer both.

Where to buy whisky in shops, by state

Walk-in shops are where you can see a whisky before you buy it. Below are the stores we could verify from the retailers' own websites.

Kuala Lumpur and Selangor

  • Single & Available, Bangsar Shopping Centre: GF, Lot G111A, Jalan Maarof, Bangsar. Open daily 10am–8:30pm.
  • Single & Available, Plaza Damas: D-0-3 & D-1-3, Block D, No. 60, Jalan Sri Hartamas 1, Sri Hartamas. Open weekdays 10am–5:30pm.
  • W Wine & Liquor Warehouse, Puchong: phone 03-8076 6188.
  • W Wine & Liquor Warehouse, Kota Damansara: phone 03-6143 9088.
  • eLuen Heng warehouse: collect online orders during office hours. Call the head office on +603 7983 9000.

In KL, shops follow the City Hall (DBKL) rules from 1 Nov 2021. Supermarkets, hypermarkets and other retail outlets may sell alcohol only from 7am to 9pm. Also, the alcohol must sit in a separate area with signs. Sundry shops, convenience stores and Chinese medicine shops may not sell hard liquor at all in KL.

Johor

Luen Heng lists a Johor branch on +607 861 9597. We could not verify a specialist walk-in whisky shop in Johor Bahru. So if you wonder where to buy whisky in JB, order online from a retailer that delivers to Johor.

Penang, Perak, Melaka, Sabah and Sarawak

We could not verify a dedicated whisky shop in Penang, Ipoh, Melaka, Kota Kinabalu or Kuching from an official source. That does not mean none exist. It means we could not confirm one. Until we can, the safest answer to where to buy whisky there is a national online retailer. eLuen Heng says it covers East and West Malaysia, with 4–7 working days outside the Klang Valley.

A good shop will tell you where its stock comes from.

Supermarkets that sell whisky

If you want to know where to buy whisky with your groceries, Jaya Grocer is the one chain we could confirm. Its website has a whisky section with blends, single malts, Irish whiskey and Japanese whisky. For example, it lists Johnnie Walker, Chivas Regal, Singleton, Macallan and Nikka.

Other chains are less clear. Cold Storage's site now redirects to Mercato, and we saw no alcohol section there. Similarly, the online shops for Lotus's and Village Grocer showed no spirits section. We could not load AEON's online shop at all. Some of these stores may still sell whisky in person, so ask at your local branch.

Authorised distributors: who brings whisky in

Most whisky in Malaysian shops arrives through a few licensed importers. Before you buy whisky, ask the seller where the bottle came from. Knowing these names helps you judge the answer.

  • Moët Hennessy Diageo Malaysia (MHD): a joint venture of LVMH and Diageo, set up in 1970. It handles Johnnie Walker, among others.
  • Pernod Ricard Malaysia: brands include Chivas Regal, Royal Salute, The Glenlivet and Jameson.
  • Single Malt Sdn Bhd: the company behind Single & Available. It describes itself as the sole importer of most single malt brands in Malaysia.
  • Luen Heng F&B: an independent importer and distributor for East and West Malaysia.
  • Drinks Alliance: a boutique distributor set up in 2019, which brought BenRiach to Malaysia in 2021.
  • Tong Woh: established in 1968 and focused on whisky, according to Shopee's 2023 list.

So if a marketplace seller cannot name the importer of a bottle, take extra care.

Buying whisky on Shopee and Lazada safely

Licensed alcohol sellers do trade on Shopee Malaysia. In fact, Shopee's own blog points to official shops with ".os" handles, such as luenheng.os. Brands back this up. Pernod Ricard Malaysia tells buyers: "Always purchase from the official Pernod Ricard Store on platforms like Lazada and Shopee."

So where to buy whisky on a marketplace? Use official brand stores and the stores of licensed retailers you already know. We could not load Shopee's or Lazada's Malaysian policy pages, so we cannot quote their rules. Summaries of their help pages suggest both limit alcohol to approved sellers, but we could not confirm this for Malaysia.

Red flags on marketplaces

  • The price is far below the typical shelf price.
  • The seller is not an official store and cannot name the importer.
  • Photos show no tax stamp, or the stamp looks blurred.
  • The listing avoids the platform's checkout and asks for a bank transfer.
  • Seals, labels or packaging look wrong in photos or on arrival.

Use the table below as a price check. If a listing sits well below the "lowest seen" figure, walk away.

How to check a whisky bottle is genuine

Legal whisky in Malaysia carries a Customs excise stamp, the setem cukai. Malaysia introduced a new stamp with tracking and security features in early 2015. In 2026, the KL Customs director put it plainly: "Importing liquor requires a licence and tax stamps." So the stamp is your best single check. Follow these steps every time:

  1. Buy from a licensed seller. Choose an established retailer, a supermarket or an official brand store.
  2. Compare the price. Check our whisky price Malaysia list. A bottle far below the typical range may be fake, refilled or untaxed.
  3. Find the tax stamp. Look for the setem cukai on the bottle. A missing stamp is a red flag.
  4. Scan the stamp. Use the free Setem Cukai app from the Royal Malaysian Customs Department. It checks the stamp's security features. If the scan shows no product data, do not drink it.
  5. Check the seal and cap. It should be intact and straight. For example, Johnnie Walker introduced caps in 2008 that do not return to their first position once opened.
  6. Check the label. Look for sharp printing and correct spelling. Labels must also carry the warning "Meminum arak boleh membahayakan kesihatan".

Also, ask about the importer. A licensed shop can tell you which Malaysian company brought the bottle in. If you still have doubts, Pernod Ricard Malaysia offers help to verify its products at [email protected].

Fake tax stamps exist, so scan them

Looking at the stamp is not enough. In Aug and Sep 2024, Kedah Customs raided sites in the Klang Valley and Bukit Mertajam. Syndicates there printed fake tax stamps "using modern printing technology", according to RTM. Officers seized 5,476 bottles.

Then in Feb 2025, the domestic trade ministry (KPDN) seized 244 bottles of fake liquor worth RM104,918 at two KL entertainment outlets. When officers scanned the tax stamps, the scans "did not produce any information related to the products". In other words, the app caught them. That is why scanning beats a quick look.

Why it matters: methanol and illegal liquor

Most of the 2018 victims were foreign workers. They bought cheap brands such as "Mandalay Whiskey" and "Grand Royal Whiskey". Afterwards, authorities seized 15,630 bottles from 1,961 premises, according to the record of the 2018 methanol poisonings. Fake whisky is not just a waste of money. It can be deadly.

Recent seizures

Illegal liquor remains a live problem, which is why where you buy whisky matters. Here are recent cases from official or news sources:

  • Iskandar Puteri, Johor (Feb 2025): police raided two factories and seized fake liquor, barrels, machines and 438 boxes of empty McDowell's bottles, worth RM329,990.
  • Port Klang (Feb 2026): Customs stopped a 40-foot container of undeclared liquor, 4,552.52 litres worth RM380,524.16. A raid on an illegal bottling site found another 703.3 litres, as NST reported.

Cases like these explain why legal bottles cost what they do. Fixed duties add RM86.80 to a 70cl bottle at 40%, before sales tax, and smugglers try to dodge them. Our whisky tax guide explains the sums.

Age checks and delivery

21 is the legal minimum age to buy alcohol, under the Food (Amendment) Regulations 2016. Enforcement was reported from December 2017, with the Health Ministry announcing the 21 rule on 16 Oct 2018. Sellers who break the rules face a fine of up to RM10,000 or up to 2 years' jail.

We found no law written just for online alcohol sales. However, the age rule applies to every seller. So most licensed retailers ask you to confirm your age, and delivery riders may check ID at the door. Have your MyKad or passport ready.

Finally, know where to buy whisky that suits how you will enjoy it. If you want to taste before you buy a full bottle, a whisky bar is a good start. See our guide to whisky bars in Malaysia, and pick the right whisky glass once the bottle is home.

Frequently asked questions

Where is the best place to buy whisky in Malaysia?

Specialist retailers such as Single & Available, eLuen Heng, Whiskery and W Wine & Liquor Warehouse, plus supermarkets such as Jaya Grocer. Brand-owned official stores on Shopee and Lazada are also a safe choice.

Is whisky on Shopee real?

It can be, if you buy from an official or licensed store. Pernod Ricard Malaysia advises buying only from its official store on Lazada and Shopee. Be wary of unofficial sellers with very low prices.

Can customs tax stickers be faked?

Yes. In 2024, Kedah Customs found syndicates printing fake tax stamps with modern printers. That is why you should scan the stamp with the Customs Setem Cukai app, not just look at it.

How do you spot fake whisky?

Check the price, the tax stamp, the seal and the label, and scan the stamp with the Setem Cukai app. If anything looks wrong, do not drink it and report it.

Where can I buy whisky in Penang, Johor Bahru or Kota Kinabalu?

We could not verify a specialist bottle shop in those cities. However, eLuen Heng delivers across East and West Malaysia, and Single & Available ships outside the Klang Valley in about 5 working days.

Can I get whisky delivered in Malaysia?

Yes. Several licensed retailers deliver. For example, eLuen Heng charges RM10 in KL and RM30 outside the Klang Valley, with free delivery above set amounts.

Do I need to be 21 to buy whisky online?

21 is the legal minimum age to buy alcohol, under the Food (Amendment) Regulations 2016. The rule covers all sellers, so expect age checks when you order or receive a delivery.
