Blended Scotch Whisky: How Blends Work and What They Cost

Blends are the backbone of Scotch and the best-selling whisky style in Malaysia. Here is how they are built, who makes them and what they cost.

By Whisky Malaysia Editorial Team6 min read

Blended Scotch whisky is a mix of malt whisky and grain whisky, all made and aged in Scotland. It is the most popular style of whisky in Malaysia. For example, Johnnie Walker Black Label 12 sells for RM248–RM269 and Chivas Regal 12 for RM264–RM273, while Famous Grouse Finest costs RM153–RM190. This guide explains how blends work, how they differ from single malts and blended malts, and what the main brands cost here in October 2026.

What is blended Scotch whisky?

The Scotch Whisky Regulations 2009 define five kinds of Scotch. One of them is Blended Scotch Whisky. It means a blend of one or more single malts with one or more single grain whiskies. So a blend always contains both malt and grain.

Every part of the blend must meet the general Scotch rules. That means each whisky must age for at least three years in oak casks in Scotland. The finished whisky must also reach at least 40% ABV, and it may contain only water and plain caramel colouring as extras.

If a blend shows an age, such as "12", that number refers to the youngest whisky in it. Older whiskies often go in too, but the label must state the youngest.

Malt whisky vs grain whisky

To understand blended Scotch whisky, you need to know its two building blocks.

  • Malt whisky uses only malted barley and copper pot stills. It brings body, fruit, spice and sometimes smoke.
  • Grain whisky uses wheat or maize with some malted barley. Distillers make it in tall column stills, which run all the time. The spirit is lighter, sweeter and cheaper to produce.

Grain whisky acts as the canvas, while malts add the colour. A typical blend can draw on dozens of malts from all over Scotland. As a result, the blender can keep the taste the same from year to year, even as casks change.

How a blender builds a blend

First, the master blender picks a target style. Then the team noses samples from many casks. Next, they choose malts for fruit, depth and smoke, and grain whisky for smoothness. After that, they mix trial blends and taste them against the house standard. Finally, the chosen blend often rests together in casks before bottling, so the flavours can marry.

Most big blends have a "heart" malt. For example, Cardhu is a key malt behind Johnnie Walker, and Strathisla is the home distillery of Chivas Regal. However, a blend never relies on one malt alone.

Blended malt vs blended Scotch vs single malt

These terms look alike, but they mean different things. Here is a simple guide.

Is blended Scotch whisky worse than single malt?

This is a common myth. Blending is a craft in its own right, and many great whiskies are blends. Cheap blends can taste thin or harsh, but so can cheap malts. At the top end, Johnnie Walker Blue Label (RM868–RM929) and Royal Salute 21 (RM748–RM750) contain rare, aged whiskies.

The real difference is purpose. A single malt shows one place. A blend, in contrast, aims for balance and a steady house style. Blends also tend to cost less at each age level. For example, Chivas Regal 18 sells for RM448–RM525, while Glenfiddich 18 costs RM618–RM767.

Blended Scotch whisky brands in Malaysia

Malaysian shops stock a wide range of blends. Here are the main families and how they taste.

Johnnie Walker

Johnnie Walker has the widest range in Malaysian shops. Red Label is bright and spicy, mostly for mixing. Black Label 12 adds gentle smoke and dried fruit. Gold, 18 and Blue Label climb in richness and price.

Chivas Regal and Royal Salute

Chivas Regal leans towards honey, apple and soft Speyside fruit. The 12, XV 15, 18 and 25 cover most budgets. Royal Salute starts at 21 years old and suits gifting.

Value blends

Famous Grouse, Teacher's, Ballantine's, Dewar's, Grant's, Black & White and VAT 69 make up the value end. Most sell for under RM250. They suit highballs, parties and simple cocktails. Teacher's, for instance, is known for a slightly smoky, full style.

How to drink blended Scotch

Blends are flexible. Sip a premium blend neat or with a few drops of water. Also try a younger blend with ice, or as a highball with cold soda water and a lemon twist. In fact, the highball suits Malaysia's heat well. For recipes, see our whisky cocktails page. Whatever you choose, pace yourself and drink responsibly.

Frequently asked questions

What is blended Scotch whisky?

Blended Scotch whisky mixes one or more single malt Scotch whiskies with one or more single grain Scotch whiskies. Every part must meet the Scotch rules, including at least three years in oak casks in Scotland.

Is blended whisky lower quality than single malt?

No. Blending is a skill, not a shortcut. Cheap blends can be simple, but premium blends such as Johnnie Walker Blue Label or Royal Salute 21 use rare, old whiskies. Blends mainly aim for smoothness and a steady house style.

What is the difference between blended malt and blended Scotch?

Blended malt contains only malt whiskies from two or more distilleries, with no grain whisky. Blended Scotch adds grain whisky to the malts. Monkey Shoulder is a blended malt, while Johnnie Walker Black Label is a blended Scotch.

Is Johnnie Walker a blend?

Yes. Most of the Johnnie Walker range, including Red, Black, Gold and Blue Label, is blended Scotch whisky. Green Label is the exception, as it is a blended malt. See our Johnnie Walker price guide.

Which blended whisky is best for a highball?

Light, fresh blends work best with soda. Popular choices in Malaysia include Johnnie Walker Black Label (RM248–RM269), Dewar's White Label (RM188–RM230) and Chivas Regal 12 (RM264–RM273).

What is the cheapest blended Scotch in Malaysia?

At mainstream shops, Famous Grouse Finest (RM153–RM190) and Teacher's Highland Cream (RM170) are among the cheapest. VAT 69 appears at RM90 for a 1-litre bottle, but only at an online discounter, so availability is limited.
