Can you still buy whisky under RM100 in Malaysia? Honestly, almost never at a mainstream shop. In October 2026, we found no standard 70cl whisky under RM100 at the main licensed retailers. Only a handful of online discounter listings dip below RM100, and some of those are 1L or parallel-import bottles. This guide shows those listings, explains why tax sets a price floor, and suggests safer ways to spend a small budget.
Whisky under RM100: the listings we found
The table below shows every whisky in our price data where either the typical price or the lowest discounter price is RM100 or less. As you will see, the typical price is above RM100 for almost every row. So the under-RM100 figure is usually the "lowest seen" column, not the normal shelf price.
| Brand | Expression | Size | ABV | Typical price | Lowest seen* | Seen at |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| VAT 69 | Blended | 1L | — | RM90 | – | Mr Chow (online discounter) only |
| Famous Grouse | Finest | 70cl | 40% | RM153–RM190 | RM95 | whisky.my, Wine Warehouse, Jaya Grocer |
| Teacher's | Highland Cream | 70cl | 40% | RM170 | RM90 | whisky.my |
| Jim Beam | White Label | 70cl | 40% | RM179–RM219 | RM100 | whisky.my, Wine Warehouse, Jaya Grocer, Kanpai, Nomu, Blue Ocean, Goodstuff |
| Johnnie Walker | Red Label | 70/75cl | 40% | RM183–RM213 | RM95 | whisky.my, Wine Warehouse, Jaya Grocer |
| Dewar's | White Label | 75cl | 40% | RM188–RM230 | RM100 | whisky.my, Wine Warehouse, Jaya Grocer |
| Black & White | Blended | 70cl | 40% | RM209 | RM95 | whisky.my |
Typical price is the range at mainstream Malaysian retailers for a standard 70cl or 75cl bottle, checked in October 2026. *Lowest seen is the cheapest online discounter listing. It may be a different bottle size or parallel-import stock. Prices change often, so confirm with the retailer before you buy.
Only one row, VAT 69, has a typical price under RM100. However, it is a 1L bottle, and only one online discounter lists it, so it has limited availability. The other six are five mainstream blends and one bourbon, Jim Beam White Label. Their typical prices run from RM153 to RM230, and the under-RM100 figure is a one-off discounter listing.
Why whisky under RM100 is so rare
The short answer is tax. Malaysia charges excise on whisky at RM165 per litre of pure alcohol, and this rate has applied since 1 November 2025. Import duty then adds RM58 per litre of product. Both are fixed amounts, so they do not fall when the whisky itself is cheap.
For example, a 70cl bottle at 40% carries RM46.20 in excise and RM40.60 in import duty. That is RM86.80 before 10% sales tax, before the importer's costs, and before the shop's margin. So a genuine 70cl whisky under RM100 leaves almost nothing for the liquid, the bottle, shipping or profit.
A 1L bottle at 40% carries even more: RM124 in fixed duties before sales tax. Therefore, a 1L whisky under RM100 at a mainland shop should make you ask where the stock came from. Our whisky tax Malaysia explainer walks through these sums in more detail.

Cheap whisky and the risk of fakes
When whisky under RM100 looks too good to be true, it often is. Pernod Ricard Malaysia warns that suspiciously low prices often point to counterfeit or illicit products. Fake bottles also carry a real health risk. In 2018, methanol in illicit liquor caused 98 cases of poisoning and 45 deaths in Malaysia.
Not every low price is a fake, though. Some discounters sell parallel imports, older stock or 1L travel bottles. That is legal when the duty has been paid. Even so, ask the seller what you are buying, and compare the bottle size first. Our where to buy whisky guide explains how to check a seller.
Practical alternatives to whisky under RM100
If your budget is tight, these options give you a genuine bottle without the risk.
- Stretch to about RM150–RM200. Famous Grouse Finest costs RM153–RM190, and Teacher's Highland Cream costs RM170. Both are proper blended Scotch from licensed shops. See the whisky under RM200 list.
- Buy duty-free when you travel. On 16 October 2026, Eraman at KLIA listed VAT 69 1L at RM86, King Robert II 1L at RM63 and Ballantine's Finest 1L at RM114. However, you can bring in only 1 litre of alcohol duty-free. See our KLIA duty-free whisky guide.
- Watch for promotions. Mainstream shops cut prices during festive seasons and big online sales. So a bottle that is usually RM180–RM200 may drop closer to your budget.
- Make it last. A highball uses one measure of whisky topped with soda and ice. As a result, one bottle goes much further.
- Share a better bottle. Splitting a RM250 bottle with a friend often beats buying a doubtful cheap one alone.
Best budget whisky if you can spend a little more
These are the cheapest 70cl or 75cl whiskies at mainstream Malaysian retailers. None is a whisky under RM100, but all are close and widely sold.
| Whisky | Style | Typical price |
|---|---|---|
| Famous Grouse Finest | Blended Scotch | RM153–RM190 |
| Teacher's Highland Cream | Blended Scotch | RM170 |
| Jim Beam White Label | Bourbon | RM179–RM219 |
| Johnnie Walker Red Label | Blended Scotch | RM183–RM213 |
| Tullamore D.E.W. Original | Irish whiskey | RM185–RM235 |
Each of these is a fair first bottle. Famous Grouse and Teacher's are simple, malty blends. Jim Beam is a sweet, vanilla-led bourbon. Meanwhile, Tullamore D.E.W. is a light, smooth Irish whiskey. To learn the styles, read our guide to blended Scotch whisky.
The bottom line on whisky under RM100
In short, a genuine 70cl whisky under RM100 barely exists at Malaysian shops in 2026, because fixed duties alone are close to RM87. The few listings under RM100 come from discounters and are often 1L or parallel imports. So, if you see whisky under RM100, check the size, the seller and the excise stamp first. Otherwise, budget about RM150–RM200 for a safe, legal bottle, or buy duty-free when you fly. You must be 21 or older to buy alcohol in Malaysia, and please drink responsibly.
Prices change with promotions, stock and exchange rates. Treat these ranges as a guide and confirm the current price with the retailer.
Frequently asked questions
Can you buy whisky under RM100 in Malaysia?
Rarely. At mainstream retailers in October 2026, we found no standard 70cl whisky under RM100. Only a few online discounter listings dipped under RM100, and some of those are 1L or parallel-import bottles.
What is the cheapest whisky in Malaysia?
At mainstream shops, the cheapest 70cl bottle in our data is Famous Grouse Finest at RM153–RM190, followed by Teacher's Highland Cream at RM170. See the whisky under RM200 list for more.
Why is whisky so expensive in Malaysia?
Excise and import duty are fixed amounts per litre. A 70cl bottle at 40% carries about RM86.80 in these duties before sales tax and margins. Our whisky tax guide explains the sums.
Is whisky murah from online sellers safe?
Not always. A price far below the market is a common warning sign of fake or untaxed liquor. Check the excise stamp with the Customs Setem Cukai app, and buy only from licensed sellers.
Is duty-free whisky cheaper than RM100?
Some 1L blends are. On 16 October 2026, Eraman at KLIA listed VAT 69 1L at RM86 and King Robert II 1L at RM63. However, the duty-free allowance into Malaysia is 1 litre of alcohol in total.
Is a cheap whisky good enough for a highball?
Yes. A simple blend works well with soda and ice, and a highball also makes one bottle go further. See our whisky cocktails guide for the method.
