Langkawi Duty Free Whisky: Rules, Shops and Prices

Langkawi is Malaysia's best-known duty-free island. Here is how much whisky you can take home, where people shop, and why we do not print rumoured prices.

By Whisky Malaysia Editorial Team6 min read

Langkawi duty free whisky carries no excise or import duty, so it can cost less than on the mainland. However, you may take only 1 litre of alcohol in total back to the rest of Malaysia, and only after a stay of at least 48 hours. Budget 2027 will raise the general shopping limit to RM10,000, but the start date has not yet been announced. This guide covers the rules, the shops and how to judge a fair price.

Langkawi duty free whisky rules

The rules come from item 11 of the Customs Duties (Exemption) Order 2017. It covers people who travel from Labuan, Langkawi or Tioman to the rest of Malaysia. For Langkawi, the key points are simple:

  • Minimum stay: at least 48 hours on Langkawi.
  • Alcohol: wine, spirits, beer or malt liquor up to 1 litre in total per person.
  • Tobacco: no longer duty free, since 1 Jan 2021.

In October 2026, Malay Mail confirmed that alcohol stays duty free "subject to the applicable conditions", with "a combined total of one litre per person". So a single 1 litre bottle of whisky uses your whole allowance. If you also buy wine or beer, it counts toward the same litre.

The RM10,000 Budget 2027 plan

The government tabled Budget 2027 on 9 Oct 2026. It will raise the duty-free shopping limit for visitors to Langkawi and Labuan to RM10,000, with a 48-hour minimum stay. As of 11 Oct 2026, the start date has not yet been announced, and it was unclear which goods qualify, as SAYS reported.

For whisky buyers, the key point is this: nothing so far lifts the 1 litre alcohol cap. So plan on 1 litre of Langkawi duty free whisky per person until Customs gazettes new rules.

How the rules changed over time

Langkawi's liquor trade has changed several times. From 1 Aug 2016, Langkawi restructured the sale of duty-free cigarettes and liquor, and only 18 stores could sell them, as Bernama reported. Then in 2018, the general tax-free limit for mainland tourists rose from RM500 to RM1,000, but liquor and cigarettes sat outside it. Finally, tobacco lost its duty-free status on 1 Jan 2021.

Where to buy Langkawi duty free whisky

We could not find an official, current list of licensed liquor shops on Langkawi. The best source we found was a Shopee guide from Oct 2022. It named these duty-free retailers that sell liquor:

  • The Zon Duty Free
  • Teow Soon Huat Duty Free, a three-storey shopping complex
  • Coco Valley, near Cenang Beach
  • Haji Ismail Group, in Kuah

Because that list dates from 2022, check opening details before you go. Also note that Eraman, which runs duty-free shops at KLIA, lists only a "Food Garden" outlet at Langkawi International Airport. So do not count on a large airport whisky shop when you fly out.

Langkawi duty free whisky prices

We looked hard for a dated price list from a Langkawi shop and found none. Some websites quote price ranges for Langkawi, but we could not trace them to a named shop or date. One came from an AI-written travel guide. For that reason, we do not print them here.

Instead, use a benchmark you can trust. On 16 Oct 2026, Eraman at KLIA listed Johnnie Walker Black Label 1 litre at RM228 and Ballantine's Finest 1 litre at RM114. Meanwhile, a 70cl Black Label in city shops typically costs RM248–RM269. So if a Langkawi shop asks much more than the KLIA price, walk on. Our KLIA duty free whisky price list has the full table.

Also be wary of prices that look far too low. A bottle at a fraction of the KLIA price may be fake or refilled. Our where to buy whisky guide explains how to check seals, labels and tax stamps.

Who can buy whisky on Langkawi?

21 is the legal minimum age to buy alcohol, under the Food (Amendment) Regulations 2016. Enforcement was reported from December 2017, with the Health Ministry announcing the 21 rule on 16 Oct 2018. So shops may ask for ID.

Langkawi traders also say alcohol sales are "strictly for non-Muslims", as The Vibes reported in Nov 2021. In practice, shops ask buyers for ID. This is trade practice linked to state Syariah law, rather than a rule in the Customs order.

Taking Langkawi duty free whisky home

When you leave, you may face a Customs check at the airport or the jetty. Keep these points in mind:

  1. Count your hours. You need at least 48 hours on the island before you leave.
  2. Stay within 1 litre. One 1 litre bottle, or one 70cl bottle plus a little beer, fits the limit.
  3. Keep your receipt. It shows where and when you bought the bottle.
  4. Declare any excess. If you carry more, tell Customs. Duty applies to the excess.

Some older reports describe extra rules about where on Langkawi you must buy liquor for the mainland, and monthly quotas. We could not confirm them in a current source, so ask the shop and Customs before you buy more than a bottle.

Langkawi or KLIA: where should you buy?

Both places sell whisky without duty, but they suit different trips. The table sums up the main differences for a Malaysian resident.

So if you holiday on Langkawi for two nights or more, the island is your chance to buy. However, a flight from Langkawi to KL is domestic. The KLIA arrival shops sit in the international arrival hall, so you will not pass them on that trip. If you are flying home from abroad instead, KLIA is easier, because its prices are online and you can plan ahead.

Either way, one rule stays the same: 1 litre per person. Two adults travelling together can each bring a litre, as long as each one qualifies.

Drinking safely on the island

If you drive on Langkawi, the national drink-driving law still applies. Since 23 Oct 2020, the legal limit has been 50mg of alcohol per 100ml of blood, and penalties are severe. So if you plan to enjoy a dram, leave the car at your hotel.
