The best-known whisky bars in Malaysia are in Kuala Lumpur and Petaling Jaya, with a few more in Johor Bahru and Penang. Many online lists are years out of date, so we only include whisky bars in Malaysia for which we found recent evidence, and we show that date. Where we could not confirm a bar, such as in Kota Kinabalu and Kuching, we say so plainly. Always check opening hours before you go.
How we checked these whisky bars in Malaysia
Bars open, move and close often. So for each venue, we looked for the most recent page that shows it is still running, such as an official website, a dated review or a news story. We call this the "last evidence" date.
A recent date does not guarantee that a bar is open today. Likewise, an older date does not mean it has closed. However, it gives you a fair idea of how much to trust each listing. We checked all these whisky bars in Malaysia on 16 October 2026.
Whisky bars in Kuala Lumpur and Petaling Jaya

The Klang Valley has the widest choice of whisky bars in Malaysia. Here are the venues we could verify.
The Whisky Bar KL
- Est. 2010Opened
- ~800Labels, per the bar
- 2026Last evidence
The Whisky Bar & Steakhouse sits at 46 Changkat Bukit Bintang, in the heart of KL's nightlife strip. According to its own website, it opened in 2010 and stocks nearly 800 labels. It also offers whisky flights of four to eight drams, which is a good way to compare styles.
A 2019 Time Out listing gave late-night hours, but those may have changed. So check before you go. The website showed a 2026 copyright date when we checked.
Whisky House Kuala Lumpur
- Level 47Rooftop setting
- 500+Bottles, per Time Out
- 2025Last evidence
Whisky House is on Level 47 of TSLAW Tower, 39 Jalan Kamuning, Imbi. Time Out (March 2024) described over 500 bottles of whisky, city views and live music, open daily from 3pm to 3am. Also, Trip.com listed it in its 2025 Asia 100 bars.
61 Monarchy, Damansara Utama
- 400+Whiskies
- ScotchMain focus
- Nov 2024Last evidence
61 Monarchy is at 61M Jalan SS21/1A, Damansara Utama, Petaling Jaya. Owner Andrew Tan told The Star in November 2024 that the bar has over 400 types of whisky, mostly Scotch single malts. It also offers independent bottlings, tasting flights and barrel-aged cocktails. So it suits drinkers who want to try something they cannot easily buy in shops.
RYE Speakeasy & Whisky Bar, Hilton Petaling Jaya
- 2025Opened
- Wed–Sun4pm–1am (May 2025)
- May 2025Last evidence
RYE opened in 2025 at Hilton Petaling Jaya, 2 Jalan Barat. A May 2025 review described a speakeasy-style whisky bar with live music, open Wednesday to Sunday from 4pm to 1am. At the time, the reviewer noted that the whisky collection was still growing.
Hotel and cocktail bars
Some hotel bars also serve good whisky, although they are not whisky bars as such. For example, Bar Trigona at Four Seasons KL is a cocktail bar. It made Tatler's Best 100 Bars in Asia-Pacific 2025, according to a Four Seasons press release from November 2025. It is a good choice if you prefer whisky cocktails to neat drams.
MO Bar at Mandarin Oriental KL is often described as having a strong single malt list. However, we could not confirm this on the hotel's own page, so treat it as unverified.
Older KL venues we could not confirm
Lists from 2018 to 2020 also name Nant Whisky Bar (The Saujana), Saro Lounge (Pavilion Elite), Chime Lounge (Sheraton PJ), Torii, Kenshin and Marini's on 57. We found no recent evidence that these still run as whisky venues. So we do not list them as current. If you plan to visit, check first.
Whisky bars in Johor Bahru
Johor Bahru has a smaller bar scene than KL, but it still has a few good options. These whisky bars in Malaysia's south come from a Tatler Asia guide dated December 2023, which is our last evidence for all three.
Whisky House Johor Bahru
Whisky House JB is at 5 Jalan Molek 1/27. Tatler described it as "Asia Pacific's first whisky ambassador's bar", with more than 300 whisky labels. It is the most whisky-focused venue we found in the city.
Haiiro Usagi
Haiiro Usagi, at 75A Jalan Maju, is a Japanese-inspired bar. It serves classic cocktails such as the Old Fashioned, so it suits drinkers who like whisky in mixed drinks.
MacGregor's
MacGregor's is an Irish pub at G-06, Zenith, 82C Jalan Trus. It is a more casual option for a whiskey and a meal.
Whisky bars and tastings in Penang
Penang has fewer dedicated whisky bars than the Klang Valley, and the evidence is weaker. In fact, it is one of the harder places in Malaysia to find current whisky bar listings. So please confirm before you go.
The Den, Macalister Mansion
The Den is at 228 Jalan Macalister, George Town. Earlier guides praised it for single malts and cigars, and one described it as having the "best concentration of premium whiskies on the island". However, our newest evidence is from January 2018. We could not confirm that it is still open.
Curious Llama whisky masterclass
Travel booking sites list a two-hour whisky masterclass at Curious Llama, 1st Floor, No. 8, Lebuh Cintra, George Town. The listings describe a guided tasting of six single malts for RM229 per adult, for guests aged 21 and over, in line with local rules. We could only read these listings in search summaries, so treat the details as unconfirmed.
Kota Kinabalu and Kuching
We could not verify any whisky-specific bar in Kota Kinabalu or Kuching in October 2026. A few older articles, some from 2017, mention speakeasies and hotel lounges. However, we found no recent evidence that they still run as whisky bars. So rather than guess, we have left these cities out for now. Hotel bars in both cities may still offer a decent whisky list, so it is worth asking.
Whisky festivals and tasting events

The main whisky festival in Malaysia is WhiskyPLUS, which calls itself Malaysia's premier whisky and spirits tasting event. Its 10th edition took place in Kuala Lumpur on 16 August 2025, with more than 120 brands. The 2026 KL edition was set for Saturday 15 August 2026 at W Kuala Lumpur, so it has now passed.
WhiskyPLUS had also planned a Penang edition for 20 June 2026. It then moved this to the fourth quarter of 2026, with details still to come when we checked. So watch its website for updates.
Specialist shops sometimes run tastings too. Our guide on where to buy whisky in Malaysia lists the main whisky retailers, which are a good place to ask about events.
Tips for visiting whisky bars in Malaysia
- Call ahead. Hours and menus change, so confirm before you travel.
- Bring ID. You must be at least 21 to buy alcohol in Malaysia.
- Try a flight. Several small pours teach you more than one large one.
- Ask for water. A few drops can open up a dram. Our guide on how to drink whisky explains why.
- Check the price first. Bar prices are far higher than shop prices.
Bar prices are high for a reason. Whisky in Malaysia carries excise and import duties, and service tax applies when alcohol is served at food and beverage outlets. Then bars add their own costs. So expect to pay much more per dram than the bottle price suggests. Our whisky price guide shows typical shop prices for comparison.
Drink responsibly and never drink-drive
A night at a whisky bar should end safely. In Malaysia, the legal limit is 50mg of alcohol per 100ml of blood, under the Road Transport (Amendment) Act 2020. Penalties include up to two years in jail, a fine of up to RM30,000 and loss of your licence, as FMT reported when the law took effect.
The safest plan is simple. Book an e-hailing ride or a taxi, or agree on a driver who will not drink. Also, pace yourself, drink water between drams and eat something. Good whisky bars in Malaysia are best enjoyed slowly.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best whisky bar in KL?
It depends on what you want. The Whisky Bar KL on Changkat Bukit Bintang says it has nearly 800 labels and offers flights. Whisky House Kuala Lumpur has a rooftop setting and over 500 bottles. In PJ, 61 Monarchy focuses on Scotch single malts and independent bottlings.
Where can I do a whisky tasting in Penang?
Online listings describe a two-hour whisky masterclass at Curious Llama on Lebuh Cintra, George Town, with six single malts. We could only see these listings in search summaries, so confirm details directly. The Den at Macalister Mansion was known for single malts, but our newest evidence is from 2018.
Is there a whisky festival in Malaysia?
Yes. WhiskyPLUS held its 10th edition in Kuala Lumpur on 16 August 2025, and its 2026 KL edition was set for 15 August 2026 at W Kuala Lumpur. A Penang edition moved to the fourth quarter of 2026, with details to follow on the WhiskyPLUS website.
Are there whisky bars in Kota Kinabalu or Kuching?
We could not verify any whisky-focused bar in Kota Kinabalu or Kuching in October 2026. Older articles mention a few venues, but we found no recent evidence that they still operate as whisky bars.
Why is whisky so much more expensive in bars?
Bars pay the same excise and import duties as shops, then add their own costs. Service tax also applies when alcohol is served at food and beverage outlets. So a bottle or dram in a bar costs far more than the same bottle in a shop.
What is the drink-driving limit in Malaysia?
The limit is 50mg of alcohol per 100ml of blood, under the Road Transport (Amendment) Act 2020. The safest choice is not to drive at all after drinking.
