Compared with Suntory, the Nikka price in Malaysia is steady. Most bottles vary by less than RM100 between shops. By contrast, Yamazaki can differ by hundreds of ringgit.
Nikka From the Barrel: price per bottle size
Because From the Barrel is only 500ml, its price looks lower than it really is. A 70cl bottle holds 40% more whisky. Even so, it is cask strength at 51.4%, so a small pour goes further. That is why From the Barrel is the most widely stocked Japanese whisky in our survey. Nine shops listed it, including Jaya Grocer.
Nikka history: Taketsuru and two distilleries
Nikka's story starts with Masataka Taketsuru. In December 1918 he enrolled at the University of Glasgow to study chemistry. He then trained at Longmorn distillery in Speyside and at a grain distillery that used Coffey stills. While in Scotland, he married Rita Cowan, in January 1920.
Back in Japan, Taketsuru joined Kotobukiya, the company that became Suntory, in 1923. There he oversaw the building of Yamazaki. However, he wanted his own distillery, so he left in 1934. That July he founded Dai Nippon Kaju, and the company became Nikka in 1952. The official Nikka history page lists each milestone.
Yoichi: coal fire by the sea
Taketsuru built Yoichi in Hokkaido in 1934, facing the Sea of Japan. It still heats its pot stills directly with coal, a method he learned at Longmorn. Nikka says this gives a bold, heavy, peaty malt.
Miyagikyo: soft water in a green valley
Nikka opened Miyagikyo near Sendai in 1969. It heats its stills with steam, which gives a smoother, floral and fruity malt. Nikka also installed two Coffey stills, in 1963 and 1966, and these now run at Miyagikyo.

The Nikka range sold in Malaysia
Seven Nikka bottles turn up in Malaysian shops, so the price table above covers the whole Malaysia range. The notes below paraphrase Nikka's own descriptions.
Nikka From the Barrel
Nikka blends over a hundred malt and grain whiskies, then returns them to cask for a few months to marry. It first came out in 1985.
Rich oak, vanilla, chocolate and orange peel.
Thick and sweet, with firm oak and a full body.
Woody, with a pleasant bitter edge.
Nikka Days
Days is the everyday blend at 40%, and it has one of the lowest Nikka prices in Malaysia. It mixes mellow grain whisky with slightly peated malt. Nikka describes floral aromas, a silky feel and fruity flavours. As a result, it suits a highball very well.
Nikka Coffey Grain and Coffey Malt
Both come from Nikka's Coffey stills at 45%. Coffey Grain, released in 2012, is mostly corn. It tastes honeyed, light and mellow, with a clean finish. Coffey Malt followed in 2013 and uses only malted barley. It is richer, with a silky texture.
Yoichi and Miyagikyo Single Malts
These are the two no-age-statement single malts. Yoichi is bold and smoky, with a coastal edge. In contrast, Miyagikyo is soft, floral and fruity. Trying them side by side shows how much a distillery shapes flavour.
Taketsuru Pure Malt
In short, this blends malts from both distilleries, with no grain whisky.
Apple, apricot, toast and vanilla.
Banana and orange, with malt and dense peat.
Dark chocolate, mellow oak and peat.

Start with Days or Coffey Grain in a highball: one part whisky, three or four parts cold soda, lots of ice. Our whisky cocktails guide has the full method. From the Barrel, on the other hand, is strong, so add a splash of water or a large ice cube. Then sip the single malts neat to taste the difference between the two distilleries. Please drink slowly and responsibly.
