What is Timah whisky?
Timah is a blended whisky from Malaysia. According to the official Timah website, the producer is Winepak Corporation (M) Sdn Bhd. The brand calls it Malaysia's first double peated blended whisky. Note that the brand itself spells the word "whiskey", but we use "whisky" here, in line with our house style for Malaysian whisky.
The recipe combines two aged peated malts with a neutral spirit of Malaysian origin. A master blender then brings them together. As a result, Timah has a smoky character, but it stays lighter than a heavily peated single malt.
A short history of Timah
Timah won medals before it went on general sale. For example, it took silver at the International Spirits Challenge 2020 and the San Francisco World Spirits Competition 2020. Then, on 7 October 2021, Winepak held an official virtual launch, as The Vibes reported.
Since then, the brand has listed more awards on its website. These include a gold and category win at the World Whisky Awards 2024 and 93 points in Jim Murray's Whisky Bible 2023. Awards are a guide only, though, so your own taste matters most.

The name and the 2021 debate
"Timah" is the Malay word for tin. The company says the name refers to Malaysia's tin-mining heritage in the colonial era. Its label also shows a portrait of Captain Tristram Speedy. He was a British officer who served in Larut, a tin-mining district of Perak, in the 1870s. The company links him to the arrival of whisky culture in that period.
Shortly after the launch, in October 2021, the name drew criticism. The Consumers' Association of Penang called for a ban, as the New Straits Times reported. In its view, the name looked like a short form of a common Malay Muslim name. The PAS Ulama Council also called for action, according to The Star.
In response, Timah explained the tin and Captain Speedy origins, as Marketing-Interactive reported. Then, on 19 October 2021, PAS deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man said Timah is a type of metal and not a Muslim name, though he still called the branding confusing. A deputy minister in charge of religious affairs also said the government does not intervene in alcohol production, according to Free Malaysia Today. As of October 2026, Timah is still on sale in Malaysia under the same name.
Timah tasting notes
The brand describes Timah as subtle, smooth and rich. The notes below paraphrase its official tasting notes. It comes at 40% ABV.
Light and fruity, with smoke first and a hint of flowers.
Smoky at first, then turning sweet.
Light oak.
If you enjoy Timah's smoke and want something bolder, try an Islay malt such as Laphroaig. For another Asian whisky, see Kavalan from Taiwan.

How to drink Timah
Timah is light enough to drink neat or with a little water. Because it is a smoky blend, it also works over ice or in a highball with soda. Our whisky cocktails guide shows how to make one.
With food, the gentle smoke suits satay, grilled fish and barbecue. Our whisky food pairing guide has more ideas. As always, drink responsibly and in moderation.
