The Kavalan story
Kavalan belongs to the King Car Group, a Taiwanese food and drinks company. The distillery stands in Yuanshan Township, Yilan County, in north-east Taiwan. King Car set it up in 2005, and the first spirit ran from the stills on 11 March 2006. Then the first bottle, Kavalan Classic, came out in December 2008.
The brand grew famous fast. For example, in January 2010 a Kavalan beat three Scotch whiskies and one English whisky in a blind tasting held in Scotland on Burns Night. Later, the Solist Vinho Barrique won World's Best Single Malt at the 2015 World Whiskies Awards. You can explore the range on the official Kavalan website.
Tropical maturation: why Kavalan tastes different
Yilan is hot and humid for much of the year. So the spirit and the oak work together much faster than in cool Scotland. As a result, Kavalan picks up deep flavour in a few years. However, more spirit also evaporates each year, which is part of why the bottles cost more.
The warm climate also shapes the taste. Many Kavalan bottles show tropical fruit such as mango, pineapple and papaya, along with vanilla and honey. Cask choice then adds sherry, port or wine notes. To compare Kavalan with Indian malts, read our Taiwanese and Indian whisky guide.

Kavalan range in Malaysia with tasting notes
Malaysia gets a wide Kavalan range. The notes below paraphrase common descriptions of the main bottles.
Kavalan Distillery Select No.1 and No.2
These two are the cheapest Kavalan bottles here, both at 40% ABV. No.1 costs RM395–RM449, and No.2 costs RM396–RM449. That makes them the lowest Kavalan price in Malaysia for a full bottle. Jaya Grocer also stocks both, so they are easy to find.
Fresh fruit, vanilla and light oak.
Soft and sweet, with pear, honey and malt.
Short to medium, clean and fruity.
Kavalan Classic Single Malt
Classic was the first Kavalan release, and it comes at 40% ABV. The Kavalan price in Malaysia for Classic is RM439–RM473. It is a good bottle to learn the house style.
Mango, pear and vanilla.
Honey, tropical fruit and soft spice.
Medium length and sweet.
Kavalan Concertmaster Port Cask Finish
Concertmaster finishes in port casks, which add red fruit and sweetness. It comes at 40% ABV and costs RM420–RM429. So this Kavalan price in Malaysia is often lower than Classic right now.
Red berries, honey and chocolate.
Sweet, rich and fruity, with toffee.
Medium, with dried fruit.
Other core Kavalan bottles
Several richer bottles sit in the middle of the range. For example, Triple Sherry Cask costs RM504, Podium costs RM591, ex-Bourbon Oak costs RM525–RM554, and Oloroso Sherry Oak costs RM629. The sherry bottles lean towards dried fruit and spice. Meanwhile, ex-Bourbon Oak shows more vanilla and coconut. Each of these comes from only one to three shops, so the Kavalan price in Malaysia for them can change with stock.
Kavalan Solist range
Solist is the single cask range, bottled at full cask strength. Because each bottle comes from one cask, the ABV and flavour vary. The Kavalan price in Malaysia for Solist starts at RM831 for ex-Bourbon and RM850 for Port. Next come Brandy at RM889–RM920 and Oloroso Sherry at RM933. The award-winning Vinho Barrique ranges from RM949 to RM1,488 between shops. At the top, Amontillado, Manzanilla and PX Sherry cost RM1,668 to RM2,133.
Intense fruit, wood spice and the character of the cask.

Long and warming.

Typical price is the range at mainstream Malaysian retailers for a standard 70cl or 75cl bottle, checked in October 2026. *Lowest seen is the cheapest online discounter listing. It may be a different bottle size or parallel-import stock. Prices change often, so confirm with the retailer before you buy.
Several Solist bottles appear at only one or two shops, so treat them as limited availability. Also, the Kavalan price in Malaysia for Solist Vinho Barrique shows a wide gap between shops, so compare before you buy. Where to buy Kavalan in Malaysia
Luen Heng F&B, a Malaysian importer and distributor, lists the widest range through its eLuenHeng online shop. Its Kavalan price in Malaysia for each bottle sits close to the specialist shops. Whisky.my, Whiskery and Goodstuff also carry many bottles, while Jaya Grocer stocks the Distillery Select pair. For more trusted shops, read where to buy whisky in Malaysia.
How to drink Kavalan
The core bottles work neat, with a little water or over ice. Because Malaysia is warm, a single large ice cube can be pleasant. However, Solist is very strong, so add water a few drops at a time. A tulip-shaped glass helps, so see our whisky glasses guide.
With food, the fruity style suits roast duck, mango desserts and mild cheese. Our whisky food pairing guide has more ideas. As always, sip slowly and drink in moderation.

Is Kavalan a good whisky?
