The Talisker story

Brothers Hugh and Kenneth MacAskill founded Talisker in 1830. The distillery sits on the shore of Loch Harport in Carbost, on the Isle of Skye.

Fire destroyed the stillhouse in 1960. However, the owners rebuilt it to the same design, so the style stayed the same. Today Talisker belongs to Diageo, and the 10 Year Old is part of its Classic Malts range. Also, Talisker 18 won "Best Single Malt in the World" at the World Whiskies Awards in 2007.

The brand describes its whisky as smoky, peppery and shaped by the sea. You can read more on the official Talisker page at Malts.com.

What Talisker tastes like

Talisker uses peated malt, but it is not as heavy as the big Islay names. Instead, the smoke sits next to black pepper, sea salt and dried fruit. That peppery kick is the signature of the house. Diageo does not publish a phenol (PPM) figure on the page we checked, so we describe the smoke in plain words.

Because of this balance, many Malaysian drinkers see Talisker 10 as a good first smoky malt. In fact, local forum users often name it as a budget-friendly single malt. For more on styles and regions, read our single malt whisky guide.

Talisker range in Malaysia with tasting notes

Four Talisker bottles turn up in Malaysian shops. The notes below paraphrase common descriptions of each one.

Talisker 10 Year Old

The 10 is the classic bottle, at 45.8% ABV. It is the one most bars and shops stock. The Talisker price in Malaysia for the 10 is RM295–RM319, so it is one of the best-value smoky malts here.

Nose

Sea spray, smoke and a hint of citrus.

Palate

Dried fruit and malt, then a burst of black pepper.

Finish

Long, warming and peppery.

Talisker Storm

Storm has no age statement and also comes at 45.8% ABV. It pushes the smoke and spice a little harder than the 10. We saw it at RM299, but it was out of stock at that shop when we checked.

Nose

Smoke, brine and spice.

Palate

Bold pepper, sweet malt and a smoky edge.

Finish

Warm and lingering.

Talisker 18 Year Old

The 18 is the older, softer bottle in the range, at 45.8% ABV. Its Talisker price in Malaysia is RM729, and we found it at only one mainstream shop.

Nose

Gentle smoke, toffee and orange peel.

Palate

Rich and smooth, with dried fruit, oak and pepper.

Finish

Long, sweet and lightly smoky.

Talisker Skye (limited availability)

Skye is a softer, sweeter take on the house style. However, we found it at only one online discounter, at RM210, and it was sold out. So treat it as limited availability.

The table below covers every Talisker we found on Malaysian shelves. We checked whisky.my, W Wine & Liquor Warehouse and Whiskery for the 10. Note that online discounters may sell parallel-import or other-size bottles. So their lowest price is not always a like-for-like match.

It may be a different bottle size or parallel-import stock. Prices change often, so confirm with the retailer before you buy.

The Talisker price in Malaysia for the 10 hardly moves between the big shops. So promotions matter more than the store you pick. For other island malts, see Highland Park and Lagavulin, or read our best single malt in Malaysia list.

Where to buy Talisker in Malaysia

Whisky.my, W Wine & Liquor Warehouse and Whiskery all list the 10. If you want the 18 or Storm, whisky.my was the only mainstream shop with them. For more trusted shops and delivery tips, read where to buy whisky in Malaysia.

How to drink Talisker

Talisker 10 works neat, with a splash of water or over a large ice cube. It also makes a smoky highball with chilled soda. Our whisky cocktails guide shows how to build one.

With food, the sea-salt style suits seafood. For example, try it with grilled prawns, oysters or salted fish dishes. Our whisky food pairing guide has more ideas. As always, sip slowly and drink in moderation.
