A short history of Jameson
John Jameson, a Scottish-born lawyer, set up his distillery at Bow Street in Dublin in 1780. For almost two centuries, Jameson came from there. Then, in the 1970s, production moved to the new Midleton distillery in County Cork. The old Bow Street site now welcomes visitors instead.
Irish Distillers, part of the French group Pernod Ricard, has owned Jameson since 1988. According to Pernod Ricard, it is the best-selling Irish whiskey in the world. In Malaysia, Pernod Ricard Malaysia lists Jameson among its brands.
How Jameson is made
Jameson uses both malted and unmalted Irish barley. The distillery runs the spirit through the stills three times, which is a hallmark of Irish whiskey. As a result, the spirit tastes light and smooth. Then the blenders mix pot still whiskey with grain whiskey. Pernod Ricard says Jameson Original ages for at least three years.
Unlike most Scotch, Jameson uses no peat, so you will not find smoky notes. Our Irish whiskey guide explains pot still whiskey and how it differs from Scotch.

The Jameson range in Malaysia
Two bottles make up almost all of what Malaysian shops stock. Here is how they differ, with tasting notes that describe the house style. Each Jameson price in Malaysia below comes from the table above.
Jameson Original
Jameson Original is the green-label bottle most people know. It sits at 40% ABV. It is light, smooth and gently sweet, with a touch of spice from the pot still whiskey. While it is pleasant neat, it really shines with ginger ale or in an Irish Coffee.
Light floral notes and soft wood.
Smooth, with sweet vanilla and a little spice.
Short and gentle.
Jameson Black Barrel
Black Barrel is a richer blend of pot still and grain whiskey. It ages in a mix of sherry casks and bourbon barrels, and it also sits at 40% ABV. So it tastes deeper and sweeter than Original, with toffee and dried fruit. If you enjoy sipping, this is the Jameson to try.
Toffee, dried fruit and toasted wood.
Rich, with vanilla, nuts and spice.
Smooth, with sweet oak.
Where to buy Jameson in Malaysia

How to drink Jameson
The simplest serve is Jameson with ginger ale and a wedge of lime over plenty of ice. Because the whiskey is light, the ginger lifts it without hiding it. It also works with soda water for a crisp highball in Malaysian heat.
A classic serve for Irish whiskey is the Irish Coffee. The IBA recipe uses 50 ml of Irish whiskey, 120 ml of hot coffee, 1 teaspoon of sugar and 50 ml of chilled fresh cream floated on top. Find more recipes in our whisky cocktails guide, and remember to pace yourself.
Jameson vs other Irish whiskey
If you like Jameson, try Tullamore D.E.W., another smooth blend at RM185–RM235. For a malt-rich style, look at Bushmills, whose Original costs RM245–RM276. Still, for easy availability, the Jameson price in Malaysia is hard to beat. New to whisky? See our whisky for beginners list.
