The Dalmore story
Sir Alexander Matheson set up The Dalmore in 1839. The site sits on the banks of the Cromarty Firth in Alness, north of Inverness. Later, brothers Andrew and Charles Mackenzie took over the running in 1867. Then they bought the distillery outright in 1891.
The Mackenzie link explains the famous stag on every bottle. According to The Dalmore's own history page, a clan chief saved King Alexander III from a charging stag in 1263. As a reward, the king gave the clan land, a motto and the right to show a 12-point royal stag on its crest.
Whyte & Mackay took over the distillery in 1960. After that, Richard Paterson became Master Distiller in 1975 and shaped the style for 50 years. Since 2021, Gregg Glass has led whisky making, with Paterson as mentor.
Why Dalmore tastes rich: the cask story
The Mackenzies built links with wine, sherry and port makers in Europe. Those cask deals still shape the whisky today. For example, the core ages start in American white oak ex-bourbon casks. Then part of the spirit moves into aged Oloroso sherry casks. So the result is a malt with orange, chocolate and coffee notes.
